Committee Descriptions 2017-2020
Standing Committee:
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as a Director-at-Large selected from within their ranks by the newly elected Board. The Executive Committee manages the business and affairs of NASPCC with some exceptions, including such things as the filling of Board vacancies; amending or repealing By-Laws or adopting new By-Laws; and the approval of any transaction to which NASPCC is a party and in which one or more of the Directors has a material financial interest. The Executive Committee has the power to create Advisory Committees for the organization and to appoint the members of such Committees. The Board added an Invited Member to the Executive Committee at its Board Meeting July 18, 2017.
The work of the Advisory Committees below is meant to implement the activities envisioned by the Workplan adopted by the Board of Directors on July 18, 2017. The By-Laws state that the Vice President is the interface between the Executive Committee and the Advisory Committee Chairpersons.
Advisory Committees:
Education & Awareness Committee
The Education and Awareness Committee implements multiple educational and awareness activities, including usage of the Informed Decision-Making Laminate; development of NASPCC written and/or laminated materials; holding of webinars and national conference calls; conducting co-sponsored educational symposia with individual state prostate cancer coalitions; planning for the 2019 15th Anniversary Gala and Symposium; and keeping the NASPCC Facebook Page and NASPCC Website updated and current.
Communications Committee
The Communications Committee develops strategies to improve communications between NASPCC and the individual state prostate cancer organizations; assists with information gathering on activities of coalitions; creates a Memorandum of Understanding program for state prostate cancer coalitions; and creates and distributes a quarterly NASPCC Newsletter to share information on NASPCC and its participating state prostate cancer organizations.
Budget Committee
The Budget Committee led by the Treasurer proposes a budget for each fiscal year (October 1 until September 30 of the following year), which it submits to the Executive Committee for approval and for forwarding to the full Board for its approval at the 4th Quarterly Board Meeting, held the day before the Annual Meeting. The members of the Budget Committee assist the Treasurer and, along with the Treasurer, are also tasked with monitoring such budget and making sure NASPCC expenditures are compliant with the budget in place for that year.
State Coalition Development Committee
The State Coalition Development Committee has three areas of responsibility:
- Creation of new state prostate cancer coalitions;
- Targeted Mentoring and Assistance for state prostate cancer coalitions; and
- Increasing the participation of the state prostate cancer coalitions in NASPCC.
Creation of new state prostate cancer coalitions may include planning calls and travel to hold the organizational meeting for the new coalition. Targeted Mentoring and Assistance activities may include individual or group conference calls to assist with individual state coalition-specific issues and strategies. Assistance also includes the review and possible updating of our Best Practices Guide and our Coalition Start-Up Notebook. To increase participation in NASPCC, the Committee is tasked with encouraging state prostate cancer coalition leaders to not only attend the Annual Meeting and vote but to also join at least 1 Committee. The Committee also determines the official state representative for each state prostate cancer organization.
Advocacy & Public Policy Committee
The Advocacy & Public Policy Committee becomes knowledgeable about current and future public policy, research and funding issues relevant to prostate cancer on both federal and state levels; monitors NASPCC’s involvement in external organizations; encourages state prostate cancer organizations to become knowledgeable about, and involved in their state comprehensive cancer control plans; and identifies and communicates such issues as they develop, to the full state “listserv.”
Annual Meeting Committee
The Annual Meeting Committee is composed of volunteers who assist in the overall planning of each Annual Meeting, and who meet regularly by conference calls as the Annual Meeting approaches. They meet once by call after the Meeting to review the event.
Fundraising Committee
The Fundraising Committee constructs a Sponsorship Menu with opportunities for sponsorship and funding by donors; networks with potential sponsors and donors; follows up with communications or in-person meetings with potential sponsors and donors; and follows through with receipt of funds for the organization.
Medical Advisory Committee
The Medical Advisory Committee maintains relations with the NASPCC Medical Advisors who function as trusted resources to be consulted on medical and ethical issues of importance to NASPCC or to prostate cancer patients and their families.
